<<Return to Gary's Causes
The idea of the Chain Reaction Prayer Breakfast was inspired by the story of Rachel Scott who was the first student shot and killed in the Columbine High School Massacre. Since her death, her father and brother (also in the shooting) have shared her story and her view on life, which was to show a little kindness to someone and you may start a chain reaction of kindness to others. The message is one full of resilience and hope. One that encourages us all to reach out to others, to include and encourage as opposed to exclude and destroy.
Inspired by this message, Gary founded and led the first annual Chain Reaction Prayer Breakfast in December 2005 with guest speaker, Darrell Scott, Rachel’s father. This event brought together more than 1500 students, parents, and teachers at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta. The second event featured Craig Scott, Rachel’s brother. Both events were life-changing for those that attended. The stories from students and teachers on random acts of kindness after the events are heart warming. Independent of age, these events inspire us to make a difference in our world, our schools and the lives of those we touch with kindness.
